A Brief About The Place

Darjeeling is the home to many tea estates, and Happy Valley is the second oldest estate. It is known to produce some of the finest quality tea in India, which is called Super Fine ‘Tippy Golden Flowery Orange Pekoe’.

The tea bushes that are being put into use are believed to be more than 100 years old. It offers a chance to witness the extensive process of tea production. Walking through a garden on the gentle hill slopes of Darjeeling is always a special experience.

History of Happy Valley Tea Estate

It was established in 1854 by an Englishman, David Wilson. At the turn of the century, it was bought by T. P. Banerjee, and later he bought the adjoining estate and combined the two properties covering over 440 acres of land. It is the second oldest tea estate in Darjeeling and at a height of 2,100 meters is also one of the highest factories in Darjeeling. The tea bushes here are more than 80 years old. They export their products abroad, and India is the only place where one can buy their tea.

How to reach Happy Valley Tea Estate

By Air: Bagdogra Airport is 70 km away and takes almost two and a half hours to reach.

By Rail: New Jalpaiguri Railway Station is approximately 73 km away and takes about 3 hours to reach.

By Road: Siliguri, located approximately 64 km away, takes almost two and a half hours. Bus services are also available but booking a cab is the best option.

The best time to visit is between March & November and the tea factory is closed from November to February.

Entry there is free but for a tour guide it is around ₹50.
