The palace complex consists of 49 buildings in the traditional architectural style, spreading across 51.75 acres. The palace was originally located in Thrissur, the former capital of the Kingdom of Kochi.

However, the royal family of Kochi had a matrilineal custom, which means that the queen was the state’s sovereign and the king ruled under her authority. In 1775, the queen and her assistants moved to the city of Tripunithura, thereby shifting the capital to the new city.
